Long Tail Boat to Koh Tan Islands
Long Tail Boat to Koh Tan Islands
30 cm x 42 cm. Oil on canvas panel.
A long boat floating on the shore of Koh Tan Islands, Thailand.
The boat in the painting is called a Long Tail boat and is the traditional Thai boat used by locals to travel between the smaller islands off the coast. It is called Long Tail for the fact that the engine is placed on a long pole or 'Tail' around 1 meter off the back of the boat. The tail can move 180 degrees and so can be used to steer the direction of the boat and provide propulsion. The use of the long tail takes skill and concentration and on this occasion was performed by a young 17 year old Thai local. Interestingly the Islands travelled to were inhabited by friendly pigs.
